Nyika Horse Safaris are suitable for riders of all levels of ability. Since 1993 twenty horses have been stabled at the Mbawala Stables near to Chelinda Lodge. The horses are all crossbreeds between 14-16 hands. They are responsive, even tempered and well schooled – as well as being great characters!

Two popular safari trails are on offer. The Chelinda Trail is a luxury safari based at Chelinda Lodge, riding out daily exploring this remote wilderness in all different directions. A large variety of wildlife can be seen from horseback and there is also the opportunity for walking, trout fishing and game drives (both day and night).

The Mpherembe Trail offers overnight safaris of up to 10 nights. At least two nights at the beginning and one night at the end will be spent at Chelinda Lodge. In between guests ride to traditional tented safari camps set up alongside mountain streams in the North Rumphi, the Lutete and the North Rukuru valleys.


The Programs

  • The Chelinda Trail is a luxury safari based at Chelinda Lodge with morning / afternoon rides as well as other options including walking and day / night game drives. Accommodation is in a beautifully furnished log cabin with en suite bathroom, log fire and panoramic views
  • The Mpherembe Trail is a luxury tented safari of 2 to 10 nights duration with accommodations at Chelinda Lodge at the beginning and end of the safari and in a deluxe mobile tented camp while on the Trail.
  • 4 to 7 hours riding daily on horses often described as “the best in Africa”, equipped with comfortable trail saddles suited for long distances and escorted by a professional guide who is not only a capable horseman / woman, but also extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the Nyika Plateau.
  • Safaris are designed for both the novice rider, as well as the more experienced.
  • The option of one / two nights with pack horses is available on longer safaris.
  • The Chelinda Trail operates year round with a minimum of 1 guest.
  • The Mpherembe Trail is available from May to October with a minimum of 2 guests.
